This involves, among other things, book composition, evaluation and manipulation of images, cover and jacket design, and the acquisition of pre-publication certifications such as Library of Congress cataloging numbers and copyright filings.
The Production team is responsible for turning manuscript files into their final book form. Projects will be tailored to intern skills and interests, although they typically include: drafting promotional data (e.g., shortening existing descriptions, compiling keywords, crafting social media messages), writing press releases, creating promotional images or book flyers, coordinating blurb/promotional quote requests, researching marketing or sales opportunities, and sending pitches to bookstores and media outlets. The Marketing and Sales teams work to increase author and book visibility by developing and implementing strategic marketing and sales campaigns. Typical tasks include completing the initial checks of first-pass proofs, checking second-pass proofs after correction, and inspecting and revising indexes. Student interns in this department must be detail-oriented and have a good command of English grammar and style, as well as the ability to concentrate on precise, mentally repetitive tasks. The Manuscript Editorial team receives manuscripts from the Acquisitions department and, in concert with the production department, prepares them for publication.

Students who work with Acquisitions will contact potential peer reviewers, update project statuses in our database, assist editors in preparing manuscripts for production, and even evaluate potential projects. The Acquisitions team is responsible for discovering and developing all new books published by the Press and incorporates all initial stages of the origins of a scholarly book: evaluation, feedback to author, external expert peer review, and preparation of a final draft to begin production.
